Best Latin Dance Venues in Grand Rapids (and What Makes Each One Different)

Nick Fink's, The B.O.B., Ashton, 5th Street Hall, and Bostwick Lake — what each one is like.

← Back to Blog

Grand Rapids has five venues where you can go Latin dancing on a regular schedule. West Michigan Latin Dance runs events at all of them, each with a free beginner lesson, professional DJs, and an open floor where anyone can show up and dance.

But they're not all the same. Each venue has its own crowd, its own energy, and its own reason people keep coming back. Picking the right one — especially for your first time — makes a difference.

Nick Fink's — The Easiest First Experience

When: 1st Sunday of the month, 5 PM
Where: Comstock Park
Cost: Free
Ages: All ages
Lesson: 5–6 PM

If you've never been Latin dancing before, Nick Fink's is where to start. The crowd is smaller than any other WMLD event, which means the instructor has time to work with you individually during the lesson. You won't get lost in a sea of people.

The pace is relaxed. Most of the room is beginners or people who started recently. The social after the lesson feels low-pressure — you can sit out a few songs without feeling like you're missing the main event. A lot of WMLD regulars trace their first night back to a Sunday at Nick Fink's.

Best for: First-timers, people who want individual attention during the lesson, anyone who prefers a smaller crowd.

The B.O.B. — The Thursday Night Staple

When: Every Thursday, 8 PM
Where: Downtown Grand Rapids
Cost: Free
Ages: 21+
Lesson: 8–9 PM

Thursday at The B.O.B. is the most consistent event WMLD runs. Every week, year-round, no exceptions. That consistency builds a crowd — you'll see the same regulars mixed with new faces every single Thursday.

The location is downtown, the venue has a bar, and the energy picks up as the night goes on. The lesson fills up, so arrive on time. After 9 PM, the DJ takes over and the floor gets moving. It's the heartbeat of the WMLD weekly schedule.

Best for: People who want a reliable weekly option, downtown nightlife fans, dancers who want a bigger crowd than Nick Fink's but less intensity than Saturday nights.

Ashton (Candela) — The Date Night Spot

When: 2nd Saturday of the month, 6 PM–1 AM
Where: Downtown Grand Rapids
Cost: Free before 8 PM / $8 after 8 PM
Ages: 21+
Lesson: 6–7 PM

Ashton is the venue you bring a date to. The space is modern, the crowd dresses up a notch, and they serve craft cocktails. It feels more like a night out than a dance class, which is the whole point.

The beginner lesson runs from 6 to 7 PM. If you show up before 8, entry is free. After 8, it's $8. The tip: arrive early, take the lesson, and you get the full experience without paying a cover. Wear smart casual — no athletic wear.

This is one of the most underrated date night options in Grand Rapids. Instead of sitting across a table trying to keep conversation going, you're moving together, laughing at mistakes, and learning something new. Couples who come once tend to come back.

Best for: Date nights, girls' nights out, people who want an upscale atmosphere with their salsa.

5th Street Hall — The Main Event

Address: 701 5th St NW, Grand Rapids, MI
When: 4th Saturday of the month, 8 PM–1 AM
Cost: $10 (cash or card at the door)
Ages: All ages
Lesson: 8–9 PM

This is the big one. The 4th Saturday draws the largest crowd of any WMLD event. Dedicated DJ, themed nights, the whole community in one room. If you want to feel the full energy of Grand Rapids' Latin dance scene in a single night, this is it.

The $10 cover is the only paid WMLD event. It covers venue rental, professional sound equipment, DJ fees, and decorations. Every other WMLD event is free — this is the monthly celebration where the organizers go all out.

Arrive by 7:45 PM. The lesson fills fast and the floor is packed by 9:30. Follow @westmichiganlatindance on Instagram for themed night announcements.

Best for: Experienced dancers who want the biggest crowd, anyone who wants to see the whole community in one place, people who can only make one event a month.

Bostwick Lake Inn — The Summer Wildcard

Address: 8521 Belding Rd NE, Rockford, MI 49341
When: 3rd Sunday during summer months, 4 PM–9 PM
Cost: Free
Ages: All ages
Lesson: 4–5 PM

Latin dancing on a lake. Outdoor floor, waterfront views, food and drinks on-site. Bostwick Lake runs during summer months only, which makes each event feel like an occasion rather than a routine.

The vibe is the most casual of any WMLD event. Families come. People wear shorts and sundresses. The lesson runs from 4 to 5 PM, and dancing continues into the evening as the sun goes down over the water. If you're looking for a summer afternoon activity that turns into a night out, this is it.

Best for: Summer outings, families, people who want outdoor dancing, anyone who wants something scenic and different.

Which Venue Should You Try First?

It depends on what you're looking for:

Nervous and want the gentlest introduction? Nick Fink's. Small crowd, personal attention, zero pressure.

Want something you can do every week? The B.O.B. on Thursdays. Same night, same place, free, year-round.

Planning a date? Ashton. Upscale, cocktails, and an activity that's more interesting than dinner.

Want the full experience? 5th Street Hall. The biggest crowd and the most energy.

Want something unique? Bostwick Lake in the summer. Nothing else like it in Grand Rapids.

Or try them all. Most WMLD dancers hit multiple venues throughout the month. Each one adds something different.

What Every Venue Has in Common

No matter which one you pick, every WMLD event includes a free beginner lesson at the start, partner rotation (no partner needed), and a social dance floor open to all skill levels. The music spans salsa, bachata, merengue, cumbia, and more. The WMLD code of conduct applies at every venue — the space is welcoming and safe for everyone.

A note on shoes: every venue has a floor where smooth-soled shoes work best. Rubber soles grip and make turns harder on your knees. WMLD partners with Fuego Dance Shoes — use code WMLD for 10% off quality footwear designed for Latin dancing.
